Principles of Business Planning and Service Improvement

Introduction

The area chosen in service improvement is Reduction of cost of consumable stock. If efficiency is achieved in this area across all 19 clinics, no money wastage issues will arise. This area is particularly relevant to the dental community service in terms of line department management because it is critical and in the best interest of the health community to keep a check on cost inefficiencies. When the line management understand exactly what care is provided by whom, what resources are consumed, the total cost of care, and outcomes; they can develop the benchmarks, capture feedback and implement strategies that help in achieving continuous improvement in revenue expansion and patients outcome. Beside this, the financial performance management is significant in community dental service like other business areas because it provides an actionable knowledge needed to proactively manage the bottom line operations to empower the health organization in order to cerate a culture of excellence. The financial performance analysis and service quality measures are becoming vital as providers in this sector are being forced to deal with several changes and healthcare reforms under NHS. The call is to do more with less is now significant as the providers are being forced to deal with new patients, and reduced reimbursements(Buchbinder, 52). These changes are forcing to link the quality to the cost efficiencies and payment outcomes. If this issue is prevalent, it does not only show the inability of the line management but also earn cost implications for the business. Although in general, a higher stock means having a sound financial strength, but this stock becomes questionable if not managed effectively. Like every other business, community dental service requires to bring changes in it consumable stock keeping decisions because in this area, due to unprofessional staff training, multiple items are ordered in bulk despite their limited use. It is important to discourage this practice in achieving greater economies of scale within the community dental service (Buchbinder, 55).

Performance of the Department

The departmental service is growing steadily and there is a continuous support commitment from NHS to improving access to these services. According to the patient survey figures published by the health department in 2010, 59% patients tried to get to NHS dental appointments and 93% were successful. The departmental changes are lower as compared to other faculties in attracting the patients towards the dental are service. Beside this, the professional consultants and the surgeons are employed whose experience is valuable to the department (Fried, 62). Despite the entire above, one area needs focus and that is the stock consumption. The some of the issues related to this area are mentioned below.
