Can We Speak Our Minds

Introduction

Clear thinking, free speech and discussion are greatly hindered by political correctness. It is usually defined in terms of cultural Marxism as political correctness is exhibited by the left in politics as a cover for their flawed ideology. Political correctness is shrouding the personal ideas under the intention of preventing to offend someone, a deliberate effort to bypass debate and render received wisdom to avoid questions and objections. Anyone opting to deviate from the received wisdom is considered to be as ostracized by society and peers (McGowan, 2003).

Discussion

I personally think that the suppression of personal opinions and ideas or prevalence of commanding force of political correctness in today's society affects our thought-process and leads to unproductive or dummied existence. It has infected almost every aspect of life, encompassing the social relationships, politics, and media. Esp. the incidents of people suffering from the consequences of going against the politically correct notion, makes the issue of adhering to received wisdom more complex and intricate. The trend of media being politically correct may be perceived as beneficial, but it emanates various questions, such as challenging human integrity and limiting the first amendment (http://eserver.org).

USA is at a demographic crossroad. The instant when the media's developing national identity requires to be honest and knowledgeable, the politically correctness has infected it especially on topics regarding gay marriages, race, immigration, feminism etc. Media has a huge responsibility of rendering the people with accurate and correct information, without diluting it with political correctness just for the purpose of pleasing some person or group. Being politically correct encourages in promoting a narrow orthodoxy that obstructs and impedes the debate and asserts identity politics. Consequently, this fosters an environment in which vital reporting becomes biased and distorted, pro-diversity scripts become short shrift, facts are preconceived, and double standards that reinforce the “oppressed” groups in contrast to others over others become traditionally accepted (McGowan, 2003).

There are innumerable examples in history of media concerning the consequences that an individual had to face if he breaks the paradigms of politically correct and said something that offended a person/group, including the end of their career. For example, ABC network canceled a late night show called Politically Incorrect, hosted by Bill Maher, (a political pundit and a comedian) in May 2002. Maher had made a controversial comment on the matter of 9/11 ...
