Introduction

The Hershey Company has been manufacturing chocolates and candy for more than a century now. Since its inception, Hershey was known for its philanthropic ventures, starting with the Hershey Industrial School in 1909. Few organizations maintain their focus on a single goal so steadfastly as Hershey has done. Over the years, the Company grew in size and scope, making way for a well-defined vision, mission and set of values (www.hersheys.com, 2012).

Discussion

A detailed discussion of the vision, mission and objectives of the Hershey Company follows:

Redesign of Hershey's performance management system

An effective performance management system is a comprehensive process which guides the management of performance of an organization and its employees better. The system helps them set clear goals to achieve objectives. It is an effective tool to measure the final results, and identify areas that need improvement (Roy, 2011).

Hershey has a very diverse group of employees. Each group of employees has a separate motivator. Each group of employees values something different in his remuneration. Therefore, it is imperative that Hershey's has a system whereby each employee finds something to motivate him and then gets the appropriate reward for his work.

Hershey must tie performance measures to align with its core values. The core values are:

Open to Possibilities:

Hershey must make this value a part of its performance management system by encouraging line managers to adopt diversity, facilitate diverse opinions and resolve conflicts. They can also adopt this value by hiring a blend of employees from various educational, racial, religious and age groups. Furthermore, Open to Possibilities also means product and process improvements (www.hersheys.com, 2012. These measures of diversity, product and process improvements must be made a part of each employee's Performance Plan. Progress on these values must be measured through objective Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
