Case Study - Borneo

Introduction

The report is based on the case study analysis of the Borneo Island. It provides information about the identified disease with the highlighted causes, symptoms and treatment of the disease. This case study is presenting a scenario about a person who is encountered with the ache, lethargic feeling and the problem in taking breathe. The disease is named Leptospirosis that has led to failure of his kidney.

Leptospirosis

This is a rare disease that is caused by the contact of a person with Leptospira bacteria, and the infection is commonly occurred in the warmer climates. The bacteria could be found in fresh water that is contaminated by the animal urine (Anonymous, 2012). The bacteria could be found in animals such as mice, cattle, horses and dogs. The bacterium is living inside the kidney of animals that could be passed out in urine, and if passed into the soil or water, it could survive for months (Anonymous, 2011).

Transmission of the Disease

The human to human transmission of the bacterium could be rare, but it might occur during sex or it might pass on to the baby by the infected mother while breastfeeding (Anonymous, 2011). When the contact is being made with the contaminated material, the bacteria would enter the body through the open sores in the skin of a person or it might enter through mucous membranes. The bacterium might be transmitted into the human body by drinking water, which had been contaminated by the urine of the infected animal. Once entered the body, this bacterium would flow into the bloodstream and throughout the body, causing infection (Kohnle, 2012).

Diagnosis of the Disease

The disease could be diagnosed by the culture of the bacterial organism from the infected blood, spinal fluid or urine. Blood test is a ...
