Abstract

Cerebral hemisphere is the brain of a human being that has two divisions; right hemisphere and left hemisphere. The asymmetry in the hemisphere is the difference in the two divisions of the hemisphere that holds different strength and functionality. This research paper focuses on the different dominant power of the two hemispheres on the different functions. This paper clearly identified the intensity of asymmetry in males and females. It included an example of foetal and newborn babies also and described the hemisphere asymmetry. The statistical analysis incorporated in this paper shows that the male show higher hemisphere asymmetry than the females. In addition, the two hemispheres are not symmetrical.

Introduction

Laterality of mental processes is the most important psycho-physiological characteristics of brain activity, based on the dialectical unity of the two main aspects: functional asymmetry (or specialization) of the cerebral hemispheres and their interaction in the provision of human mental activity. Currently, hemispheric asymmetry is regarded as one of the fundamental laws of the brain not only human but also animals. The asymmetry is expressed in brain cognitive science as an uneven distribution functions according to the cerebral hemispheres. Language skills, analysis and categorization are am-called dominant in the left hemisphere, on the contrary the creation and emotion occupy mainly the right hemisphere. However, neurobiologists refute this simplistic division.

In humans, the functions performed by hands show more asymmetry. Around 92% of the humans say that there one hand works more efficiently and actively than other hand. It can be seen in case of throwing a ball, writing, painting, or playing or doing any activity by hands; one had works and performs faster than another hand. This is called handedness, in which one hand is used more than the other hand (Hugdahl, 2005, p.119). The difference ion the two hands of a human are not because of mechanical asymmetry; it is because of the asymmetry in the cerebral hemisphere of humans. Right hemisphere and left hemisphere are complimentary for each other. Both the hemispheres work with their own sensations, memory, consciousness, and perceptions. Both hemisphere work independently as well as concurrently.

In male and female, the brain asymmetric function is different. The brains of males are more asymmetric than the brains of female. Therefore, the brains of the male are bigger than the brains of the females. Hering-Hanit et al. (2001, p.195) explained that there is structural asymmetry in the hemisphere of new born babies and foetal. There is no difference in the right hemisphere and left hemisphere of the new born babies and foetus. However, in comparing the two hemispheres with each other; the left hemisphere is large in size than the right hemisphere. It indicates that the left hemisphere is more dominating than the right hemisphere in new born babies and foetal.
