PART: ONE

This part of thesis will discuss the development study of modern and urban development in reflecting green character. Some researchers have claimed that many buildings that are developed in the 21st century failed to compete against those buildings that were developed back in the 20th century (Barker, 2008). Sustainability in modern architectures is important to maintain; however, this portion of the thesis is developed to study the development of green character in the couple of centuries. Cities like Paris and Delhi are often argued that the city planning`s reflects green characteristic. The term “Green” is not only limited to provide plantation and reduce environmental hazards but in the field of architecture it has a larger and complex meaning (Blunt, 2005).

The green character of buildings and architecture models is focused on the designs that are eco-friendly (Barker, 2008). These urban development designs are often termed as green architecture. During the twentieth century, architects focused to generate the designs of developing of cities reflecting green in character. They utilized the approach to minimize the harmful consequences over the environment and human health. Designs and architectural models of today are greatly reflecting the attempts which were useful today in protecting the water, air and land by utilizing eco-friendly construction practices and building materials (Blunt, 2005). According to World Commission on Development and Environment, green character of architecture can be developed when the development process in sustainable (Lin & Chen, 2012). The sustainable development should meet the requirement of present without any give and take with the capability of the proceeding generations to meet their needs (Blunt, 2005). Green character also refers to the development system which the planners and designers adopt to create communities and buildings that will not reduce the available natural resources.

In the twentieth century, the designers started to utilize green or renewable resources which initiated many modernized system in reducing the load over the environmental health (Blunt, 2005). The designs and developments are challenged to minimize the global warming effects, green house gases produced, conserve resources, and offer communities that will enable people to reach their utmost potentials. Architects utilized the eco-friendly development practices using the materials available locally (Mann & Sehrawat, 2009). Edward Lutyens was a great English architect who used the traditional styles of architecture in designing many cemeteries, houses, and communities in his era. Gavin Samp has called him the greatest architect in the history of England due to his finest designs and eco-friendly communities which are still present since the First World War (Allinson, 2013).

Edward Lutyens, initially designed buildings that were all based on Arts and Crafts character. His architecture in France such as the Le Bois des Moutiers in the late 1890`s was totally based on traditional Art style. However, the work he performed over developing the capital city of India, New Delhi has been completely different. New Delhi is one of the finest cities that were reflecting the green character in architecture (Mann & ...
