ABSTRACT

In this thesis, character of architecture is discussed with particular emphasis on Quatremere's viewpoint of character in architecture. There are several factors that have an influence on the character of architecture. They are shed light upon. The most evident aspect of architecture is its visual aspect. This visual aspect is also briefly overviewed in this thesis. Additionally, a brief overview of architectural identity and historical circumstances is offered. According to Quatremere, architecture is one of the various forms of language. Each piece of architectural work has its own language and meaning. Keeping this fact in mind, Quatremere has presented the sub divisions of character in architecture in her various articles. Quatremere's sub division of character of architecture is studied in detail. According to Quatremere, character in architecture is divided into essential character, distinctive character, and relative character. Each of these sub divisions holds crucial significance as an architect builds a building.
