Civil Rights Movement

Introduction

The development experienced by the contemporary developed countries, is based on their enlightened views and the incorporation of people belonging to different socio cultural backgrounds in the mainstream society. In such societies the policies and the social frameworks are developed on the ideology of social justice and equality for all. In the traditional perspective the society in the majority of the developed countries was not based on these enlightened ideologies, rather it was based on the biased and discriminatory rules. The American society presents the ideal model of a multicultural society, which has over the decades been able to experience and address the relevant civil rights issues. In the contemporary global environment, the American society can be rightfully considered as one of the most equitable and unbiased social entities; however in the past the country had to face several challenges based on the civil rights of certain minorities. In order to attain the rights for people belonging to various socio ethnic groups the inspirational leaders from these minorities had to rise up in their communities, and lead an ideological change. In the long term perspectives the civil rights movements led by the minority based leaders, cannot be treated as movements for a certain group of people, rather these movements were necessary for the development for the overall American society.

The Civil Rights movement is considered as a global phenomenon, which was experienced by several countries during the time period of the 1960's and 1970's (Kinder & Sanders, 1996). . In this time period the American society can be treated as the role model for the global movement, where the minorities in rest of the western countries were able to follow the initiative taken by the visionary American leaders.

The demands raised by the Irish civil rights leaders, were mainly focused on the fundamental civil rights of the Irish population.

They demanded changes such as equality in the voting structure of the region, end of the long term housing discrimination and the relevant amendments in the district boundary systems. A similar movement was initiated in Canada in the province of Quebec, after the death of Maurice Duplessis, whose government was viewed as corrupt.
