[Name of the Author]

[Name of the Institute]Summary

This research study is conducted to examine the Effects of Gender on Code Switching. Code switching has evolved as a major phenomenon because of the huge cross cultural influx of immigrants and students around the world in the last forty years. The phenomenon of globalization has been the catalyst in connecting the world, and also the major factor in people becoming aware and knowledgeable of more than one language. In many nation states bilingualism is now institutionalized. The results of the study presented that the preferences of male and female differ in the use of code switching in religious, social and social networking domains. In addition to this, the study also specifies that daily life and text messaging domains do not differ in preferences of male and female over the use of code switching. Moreover, it is revealed that there is a difference in using the code switching between individuals of same gender and individuals of different gender. Furthermore, the study also indicates that people of same gender deem that individual with similar sex is using more code switching than friends of different gender. In this context, it is noted that affect of gender on the domain is using the code switching. The results of this study are valid in the sense that they have falsified many previous literature n the subject. This could also be by chance as the study was done at par with the previous studies and also the sample size that was taken was too small for generalize able results.

Effects of Gender on Code Switching

Introduction

Code switching is the formal name of using two or more languages in the period of a single communicative episode. Code switching has been given a lot of attention over the previous years because it breaks the usual norm that only a single language will be used at a single communicative episode. It is considered to be a phenomenon which needs an explanation while the use of a single language is quite normal (Heller M. 1988, pp 12-25)

Code switching is often associated with bilingualism, which constitutes use of two languages by a single person or entity (Urial Weinreich, 1953). This is considered one originating definitions of code switching.

Code switching is considered more as a verbal skill which is obtained by acquiring a great competency in more than one language than and inadequacy of knowledge of one language (Peplack 1979, pp72).

Code switching consists of various types and scholars have mainly defined these in four categories namely, intra - sentential, inter - sentential, tag - switching and Intra-word switching (Milroy L., Muysken P. 1995, pp 45-85).

Intra - sentential is used for the use of code switching in between a single sentence. Inter - sentential ...
