Introduction

As agreed by the scholars, learning is a type of process that grows well if it is cultured well. Therefore it is very necessary that we understand the importance of activities to Building Interpersonal Communication Skills (BICS) and Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (CALP) in classrooms and that, they cannot be ignored or underestimated for their quality and content. Such activities make class room sessions more interactive, fun and exciting.

Building Interpersonal Communication Skills:

By building interpersonal communication skill (BICS) we mean to improve social and conversational language that is used for oral communication. It is a social language that gives the listener many cues and is a context embedded language. It normally takes around two years for the students who have come from different linguistic backgrounds, to understand and figure out context embedded social language enthusiastically. Students who are learning English language can get the grasp of it by observing the non verbal actions of the speakers such as gestures, eye contact, eye actions, facial expressions etc. They can also understand the social language by observing the reaction of others, making use of voice cues such as intonations, phrases and stress, observing pictures, concrete objects and other appropriate and related cues that are present. Requesting to repeat or clarify the statements is also very helpful to understand the social language. (Cummins, 1984)

The greatest hindrance in learning Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills is the dread of making a mistake. Less knowledge about grammar and structure comes in the way of fluency of the new learners. Because when their concept of basic grammar and structure is not clear, communicating and forming questions gets very difficult for them.
