Communication styles in Ethnic groups



Introduction

Every ethnic group is different from the other in many aspects. These include cultural differences, language differences and differences in the styles of communication. The styles of communication differ in each ethnic group. A style of communication that is considered ethical in one ethnic group is not necessarily considered being ethical in another ethnic group. Primarily, there are two ways of communication that are, verbal communication and non verbal communication. The methods and ethics of these two are different in each and every ethnic group (Remland, Jones, 2005).

All ethnic groups differ from each another in many aspects. There are differences in the culture, as well as, there are differences in their communication styles, as well. As stated above, there are two types of communication, verbal communication and non verbal communication. In order to study the different ways of verbal and non verbal communication in different ethnic groups, it is important to define verbal communication and non verbal communication (Remland, Jones, 2005).

Verbal communication

Verbal communication can be done in two ways: orally, through oral signs and words spoken or written and by means of graphic representation of signs. There are many forms of oral communication (Magalhães, Castro, 2009). The screams, hisses, cries and laughter can express different mood and situations and are considered as the primary forms of communication. The most advanced oral communication is articulated language, structured sounds that lead to syllables, words and sentences with which we communicate with others (Magalhães, Castro, 2009).

Forms of written communication are also very varied and numerous (ideograms, hieroglyphics, alphabets, letters, graffiti, logos). From primitive ideographic and hieroglyphic writing, so difficult, to understand for us to syllabic and alphabetic phonics, better known that is an important development. To properly interpret the written message, it is necessary to know the code, which must be common to both sender and receiver of the message (Magalhães, Castro, 2009).

Nonverbal communication

Nonverbal communication is the communication that occurs through clues, signs and lack of verbal syntactic structure. This type of communication has no syntactic structure, so it cannot be analyzed. Nonverbal communication is the process of communication by sending and receiving messages without words. These messages can be communicated through gestures, body language or posture, facial expression and eye contact, communication of objects such as clothing, hairstyles or even the architecture, or symbols and graphics, as well as through an aggregate above, such as communication behavior. Nonverbal communication plays a key role in the daily life of everyone (Remland, Jones, 2005).

Differences in ethnic groups

Chinese culture is totally different from American or British culture in many, or we can say in every aspect. Their beliefs and languages are also different from that of the Americans or the British.
