Abstract

The study aims at investigating the role of research methods in the field of psychology. The qualitative research deals with the naturalistic observation and interprets the findings through thematic analysis that is analysis of themes and ideas. Besides this quantitative research deal with the facts and figures that are it deal with the numeric data. These are certain theoretical concepts that play a vital role in identifying the qualitative and quantitative research they are grounded theory, social construction and triangulation theory. These all are effective in identifying the research needs that is taken place in the field of psychology.

Introduction

In the field of research methods; the qualitative and quantitative research plays a vital role in identifying the key areas in the field of psychology. The Qualitative research includes understanding about the ideas of people. It includes observation and interviews. It helps in theory generation. It is subjective research as the words and phrases are involved in qualitative research (Guba). Quantitative methodological approaches are interested in predictions. It includes the survey and questionnaires. The data presented in numeric form. There is objectivity in the conclusion that derived from the data. There are hypotheses in the study and the study conducted to verify the hypotheses for the research and qualitative study is used to frame hypothesis for the quantitative study. There are three theories that played a vital role in identifying the key areas for qualitative and quantitative research type are grounded theory, social construction and triangulation theory (Harwell).

These are the theories that play a vital role in conducting qualitative and quantitative research in the field of psychology. These theories aims at identifying the generalizations that made through the qualitative study in the grounded theory. In quantitative of grounded theory observations are made to identify the issues related to the file of psychology. Social construction deals with the everyday interaction of human beings. They believe in the reality and illnesses of the people. The triangulation in comparison deals with the relation of people and interaction of human beings with each other. There is generalisable of concept in the triangulation similar to the grounded theory (Schostak).
