ABSTRACT

The main theme of this particular research study is to compare the contraceptive compliance between male and female college students. This research study investigates the perception of male and female about the utilization of contraceptive method. The perception, belief and behavior of college students about the contraceptive utilization are beneficial in preventing adolescent pregnancies and potential consequences. In the United States, 1,031,000 adolescent females became pregnant and 447,710 of them had live births in 1985. With this substantial rate of adolescents becoming pregnant and giving birth, there is potential for a substantial number of adolescent pregnancies that may have adverse outcomes that place the health of adolescents along with potential children at risk. Adolescent parenthood is associated with lower educational, financial, and occupational attainment. Additionally, adolescent parenthood has the potential of affecting the development of the children in that adolescent mothers have been reported to have lower mothering scores and to interact with their children in a less positive manner. The body of knowledge on adolescent contraceptive beliefs and behavior should be beneficial in promoting the health of adolescents as well as their children. The health of adolescents, as well as potential children, is a concern of nursing. This study should extend the science of nursing with increasing knowledge of nursing interventions that promote the health of adolescents. The findings of this research study indicate that male and female college students have different perception about the utilization of contraceptives. Male students are more reluctant about the utilization of contraceptives as compare to female students. Female students are willing to use contraceptives because they want to minimize the chances of pregnancy.
