Comparison and Contrast of the Yellow Wallpaper and the Rose for Emily

Introduction

The two shot stories “A Rose for Emily'' by William Faulkner and “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman are about the life of oppressed women in a patriarchal society written from a feminist point of view. The female characters depicted in those stories are dehumanized and forced into solitude by the domineering and oppressive male authorities in each of their lives. Although, written in the same perspective and era, the depiction of the characters in both stories is quite different, as authors of the stories themselves are. One of the major differences is the point of view in which these stories were narrated as “The Yellow Wallpaper” is written somehow in autobiographic fashion whereas “A Rose for Emily'' is penned down in the third person point of view. Despite of the differences, these stories also incorporate numerous similarities. Both tell the stories of oppressed women who ultimately become insane due to the confinement they feel they are forced to live in by their men. This paper attempts to highlight the similarities and differences between the two stories.
