Abstract

Today, website developers have a wide variety of choice in selecting the technology and language that are used to create an online website. There are many options available that include Perl, PHP, ASP, ASP.Net, JSP, Coldfusion etc. The most common languages used are PHP and ASP.Net. This thesis is based on comparitive analysis between the PHP and ASP.NET. PHP (Hypertext Preprocessor) is a language for writing server-side scripts (scripts). Language interpreter is already installed in it. Formerly, PHP was used only as an external extension. But today with the efforts of Microsoft, PHP (7th version) is supported in different Internet Information Services. Whereas on the other hand, ASP.Net (Active Server Pages. Net) is a tool for developing web applications. ASP.Net is not only a programming language but it is a technology that includes a set of components. It should be noted that ASP.Net is radically different from former ASP. The principle of ASP.Net applications is entirely different and will be discussed further in this dissertation. This dissertation explores the understanding of the comparison among PHP and ASP.NET regarding the development of websites. All the processes & features that are involved in the development are discussed in this dissertation.

CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

Nowadays most of the websites can be categorised as dynamic database driven websites. In a dynamic database driven website, a web page is connected to the database by means of programming and every time the information stored in the database changes, it is reflected in the web page (Bishop and Hurter 1999: 105) . ASP.NET and PHP are considered as two competing technologies for developing dynamic websites. ASP.NET was developed by Microsoft and the version 1.0 of the .NET Framework was released in 2002. PHP was designed by Rasmus Lerdof in 1995 and later on developed by the PHP Group.

Other technologies used for developing dynamic websites are Java Server Pages (JSP), PERL and Cold Fusion. JSP was released by Sun Microsystems in 1999. JSP technology is used in the development of web applications; that are server and independent platform. ColdFusion is used in the development of rich Internet applications and includes advanced features for enterprise integration (Bishop and Hurter 1999: 105).

ASP.NET is considered to be the upcoming technology of web development. The main purpose of ASP.NET is to create dynamic web pages. It allows C# and VB.Net for programming the web applications. One striking feature of ASP.NET is web services. Web services indicates several pieces of application working in servers around the world. Extensible Markup Language (XML) is used in ASP.NET. The built-in tools of ASP.NET supports XML for data storage, manipulation and ...
