Comparison of World Art

Introduction

The world of art is great. It shows the surreal and the corporeal. It shows both time and space. It shows how the world existed at certain times and in different cultures. The work of art has always been to conserve and preserve the time and space. It locked the clock of time and to preserve what will not happen again in time. Hence, art has been an effective method of preserving time as well as cultures. Ancient people used art to convey their distinct cultures. They considered art as the ideal vehicle to convey their emotions, feelings, and attitudes. They used art to convey their philosophies. This was done intricately, exquisitely and subtly and through conspicuous means. Hence, art remained the tool of the artist to convey whatever meaning he or she thought was representative of their time or space.

Accordingly, time and space have been captured well in world art. The art has always been there to conserve both time and space. The creation of a piece of art could capture the time per se. However, several other artists also created art to show the importance of time. They developed their art which was there to tell about the time. This time was different. It was the very notion of time that they captured, instead of representing their own times alone. Accordingly, they were able to develop pieces and works of art that became timeless through their ability to show and tell time. Still, there were other works that commented on time per se, rather than providing an ability to know time of the day. These works were then based on the notion of time which was different from the concept of times as given in the period or era.

The purpose of this work is to compare the various pieces and works of art from different eras and cultures. However, only those works of art have been included which show the theme of time and space, with time being the dominant theme.

Calendar Stone by Aztec

The Calendar Stone was developed by the Aztecs circa 1427 CE. The Calendar Stone which was a huge piece of carved basalt rock was found underneath a plaza in Mexico City in the sixteenth century. There are elaborate carvings on this piece of art and show both a myth of the Aztecs as well as the ritual calendar used by them.

It is said that like most Mesoamerican peoples, the Aztecs also used tools to make their carvings and drawings which were made of obsidian. Obsidian is a hard substance which is a glasslike, crystalline, volcanic stone. They used it to make cameos and sculptures. The quality of obsidian is its hardness. Accordingly, it is even sharper than the stainless steel sometimes. This is why it is also used to make surgical instruments (Belloli 23).
