It is increasingly becoming important to ensure food safety, since by consuming unhealthy and unsafe food people are suffering from food-borne illness. Therefore it is important to identify appropriate ways, which are necessary for ensuring food safety. It was estimated by the World Health Organization (WHO) that approximately 2.2 million people are killed each year due to food-borne diseases. In the UK around 1 million people are suffering from food-borne illness, due to which the economy has to bear a cost of £2 billion annually.

Food-borne pathogens cause great threat and risk to food safety; therefore, it is essential to inform people about the negative impacts of food-borne diseases and simultaneously determine effective ways that are vital in ensuring food safety. Consequently this study will help consumers to adopt preventive strategies to eat healthy and safe food, as many people are not aware of the consequences of unsafe food.

Most of the consumers in UK lack the knowledge about food safety and hence the study will provide them with significant knowledge about the matter to live a better and healthy life. Thus, the research is aimed at exploring the awareness and knowledge that consumers have about food safety and food-borne diseases and how they can be prevented and the ways through which consumers can avoid cross contamination.
