The Great Mosque of Cordoba is one of the violently contested spaces, the mosque which began in 784 and expanded in 961. The mosque is one of the oldest and finest structures still existing from the time when Muslims ruled Al-Andalis. In the year 1236, Cordoba was captured by Ferdinand III of Castile, and the mosques were changed to churches. There is a constant debate over the religious buildings and its origin that encourages dispute among Muslims and Spanish Church Authorities.
