Introduction

In the past three decades, a breakthrough in genetic research and biotechnology has produced. Max Born said in his essay, "Reflection," "But suddenly, some 300 years ago, an explosion of mental activity occurred: science and modern technology were born since then have grown at an increasing pace, probably faster than. Exponentially, and are now transforming the world of humans beyond recognition (Almond, 98).

Similarly, Michael Bishop said in "Enemies of Promise," "We live in an age of scientific triumph. Science has solved many of the enigmas of nature and greatly expanded human knowledge" (237). Both scientists have written essays by the current controversies over genetic engineering and biotechnology research, but surprisingly, their predictions are correct, taking into account the number of protests and fears generated by these investigations.

Article summary

The science of genetic engineering has always been in the human mind from the famous French scientist, Mendel discovered the genetic characteristics dominant in some plants in the 16 century, and began to cross changing the characters to get strong plants with rapid growth more production. Today, after the discovery of DNA by the American scientist James Watson "... that the specific pairing we have postulated immediately suggests a possible copying mechanism for the genetic material" (138), genetic engineering became a matter of interest to many scientists.

All scientists are trying to use a new method in either plant or animal to increase its production. Some of these new methods are being used already, and many of the foods people eat are now mass produced by many methods of genetic engineering to feed the global overpopulation.

The world population is exploding due to medical advances. "Medicine has surpassed most of the pests and epidemic diseases and human life has doubled in one generation: the result is catastrophic overpopulation" (Born 209). Due to the increasing population demand for food has also increased, as in India and China. Also the decrease of water resources due to the dry land has worsened the situation of food production and in different parts of Africa. Therefore, population growth and dry land are good reasons why scientists do their research in the development of a new technology that provide human needs.

Despite these successes, some methods have negative side effects in humans, for example, insecticides, used to kill plant pests, such as arsenic, proves to be a carcinogenic material. As in the essay, "Elixirs of Death" by Rachel ...
