How is Corporate Social Responsibility an Important Factor for Every Organization in terms of Profit Maximization

CHAPTER I: INTRODUCTION

Definition

Corporate social responsibility can be well-defined as the constant obligation shown by organization to improve the quality of life of the people living in the societies and contribute to the growth of the economy and also to positively impact the people (Crane & McWilliam, 2009, 189).

Background

Shell is one the leading oil and gas firm in Nigeria because they account for more than 80% production of oil and gas Nigeria, the company started their Nigeria Business adventure in the year 1937 in which they discovered their first oil in a small town called Olobiri Delta state Nigeria, she first export outside Nigeria in 1988. Shell has had huge achievement in Nigeria oil and gas sector and the company Is an hot topic in Nigeria and abroad due to their corporate social responsibility negligence in the society, Nigeria and especially the people of Olobiri always faulted Shell for failing to adhere to global regulations, Shell is also accused of polluting the environment (Blowfield & Murray, 2011, 88).

What Needs To Be Done

I will be looking at the importance of corporate social responsibility of organization that choose the proactive stance to help them survive and stay healthy compare to Shell, Shell is really dynamic and healthy because they account for more than 80% of Nigeria oil exploration and they don't have many rival to compete in Nigeria oil and gas sector, royal Dutch Shell are making millions of dollars from oil production so taking care of the society will help the company public image and will not be view as a money oriented organization. I will make a deep research into Shell corporate social responsibility practice, the good and the bad part of their CSR activities. Primary data research will be conducted and feedback of the people of Olobiri where Shell drill their oil from will be effectively evaluated for me to have a deep insight of the social responsibility at Shell (Crane & McWilliam, 2008, 120).

Reason for Choosing this Topic

I am choosing this topic as it's my desire to have a deep knowledge about Shell corporate social responsibility, I assumed Shell is taking the defensive stance which is not enough to satisfy the people of Olobiri, Shell have destroyed the farm land, pollute water for fishermen and so many wild life wasted, the topic of Shell not been responsible has raised awareness in Nigeria and internationally. Am really concerned about how the people of Olobiri are living life, that's is main reason why I choose this topic to let the government of Nigeria know how to restore peace back to the community of Olobiri ...
