Counseling Philosophy

The three top theories which were identified by the STS are; Person-Centered Therapy having the highest score of 12, followed by Gestalt's and Reality Therapy with the scores of 10 and 7 respectively.

A brief summary of the highest scoring therapies are as follows:

Person-Centered Therapy: The person behind the development of Person-Centered or Client-Centered Therapy was Carl Rogers who was an influential psychologist of the United States. Person-Centered therapy has its roots to non directive way of treatment which was designed in a manner that the therapist does not lead the session, instead the individual seeking therapy do as considered to be an expert of his experiences. The therapist job is only to follow the direction of the client who can lead the session in whatever way he/she wants to rather than to be lead by the therapist towards achieving a certain objective at the end of the session. This therapy gives clients self confidence as the therapists have complete faith in them for speaking the things which they actually want to change by therapy, eventually leading to the key determining the problem. Therapists also believe that their clients know about the frequency of treatment and that for how long they will need it. According to (Wood and Wood, 2008) the basic objective of this therapy is to provide a supportive environment to the clients so that they can sort out their problems and to reach the stage of self actualization and self fulfillment.

Gestalt's Therapy: The origin of Gestalt's Therapy is from the work of two psychotherapists Lore Perls and Frederick Salomon; it also has three major sources i.e. psychoanalysis, phenomenological writings and humanistic centered on everyday life experiences and Gestalt psychology.
