Abstract

This paper explains the effects of incarceration of juveniles in adult prison. It explains that adult courts bring change in the mind set of the young prisons. This paper explains how the environment of adult courts affects the psychology of young criminals and various factors behind these psychological disorders. This paper also explains the personal opinion of the author related to this problem.

Introduction

In today's era, youngsters are also committing a number of crimes. They also have to face imprisonment at a very young age. Some times it is also difficult for them to face the dangers related to imprisonment. Rujevic explained that most of the youngsters, in prison duration, want to do social work instead of sitting free (Rujevic, 2013). The majority of the young criminals in adult courts are not arrested for serious crimes. They were involved in not dangerous but major crimes like snatching, killing and theft. Young criminals adopt the habits of adult criminals while living with them and are treated in the same manner as the adults or dangerous criminals. The youngsters, who are locked up in adult courts, faced higher risks for death, violence, suicide and abuse. It has been concluded in the study that youngsters should not place with the adults and the juvenile correctional administration has to make changes in their systems (Ryan, 2012). This paper explains the various reasons behind the juvenile incarceration in adult courts.

Issue in the article

There are many issues faced by youngsters when they are taking for imprisonment in juvenile justice system. They are not mentally prepared for the detention. Researchers found that young criminals get mentally disturbed when they are shifted to adult court. These young criminals need some mental treatment when they are shifted to adult imprisonment after committing serious crimes. In this article, the issue of mental health is highlighted which is related to young criminals (Murrie, et al 2009).

Significance of issue

The issue discussed by the author in this article is related to the mental health of the juveniles in the adult prison. The juveniles have to face many psychological problems in the adult incarceration. Researchers have found symptoms of various psychological problems associated with these juvenile. These symptoms show that these youngsters need mental treatment.
