Cross Cultural Research Paper

Introduction

In today's world, there are many religions, and they all practice and worship in different ways. They all have certain beliefs, certain rituals and, traditions that they carry. This paper aims to describe a holiday tradition or celebration practiced by people from other cultures. Being a Hispanic and catholic, the topic chosen for this paper is Rosh Hashanah., which is a Jewish holiday. Rosh Hashanah is celebrated for two days, the 1st and 2nd day of the Hebrew month of Tishrei. The Jewish holyday of Rosh Hashanah is rich in tradition and historical background According to Jewish tradition, Rosh Hashanah celebrates the culmination of the creation of the universe, and the acceptance of God's sovereignty over all things. These are also the days when God judges human actions during the year, and decide on their future for the next year. It's the period of repentance up to Yom Kippur, the day on which the decision will be decreed for those who are in a state of uncertainty.

Origins and History of Rosh Hashanah

Although the bible has not made any references to the holiday as signifying the importance of the Day of Judgment or the New Year, it is likely that the Rosh Hashanah originated in a royal enthronement ritual that was popular during biblical times (My Jewish Learning). And while it falls in the seventh month, rabbinic tradition later reached a consensus to designate the Rosh Hashanah to the beginning of the year. It is also assumed that the origin of this tradition was adopted from the Babylonians. However, the rabbis imbued it with Jewish significance as the anniversary of the important day on which the world was created, or of the day on which humanity was created (Jewish Virtual Library, n.d.). The celebration has not been clearly mentioned in the Torah which is the main Jewish book and contains the text that essentially established the religion. Rather, it appears in the bible under various names.
