CHAPTER 4: ANALYSIS OF DATA

This chapter presents summary statistics of the data collected from questionnaires along with the graphical representations and summary tables listed in Appendix. In the sample of 100 respondents 25 each from First Bank of Nigeria, Skye Bank, United Bank of Nigeria, and United Bank of Africa, an overall response rate was 94%. Table 4.1 lists the proportions of the responses from the four banks separately.

Hence the discussion of data in this chapter is supported by the analysis of a sample size of 94. The distribution of respondents, according to the demographic characteristics such as age, gender and ethnic origin and also the duration of employment, is given in Table 3.2.

Majority of the participants in current study are female. 58.5% of the respondents are female while males are 41.5%. This difference in the respondents according to gender depicts the actual proportion of the employees in banking sector in Nigeria. As the results are discrete and of qualitative nature graphical representations of the summary statistics can provide a general overview of the characteristics of participants. For this purpose of Pie charts are drawn using above statistics, the charts depict majority characteristics of the participants according to their demography.

Figure 4.1: Age of Participants

Distribution of employees according to their age who participated in the study is proportional to their ages in other words; younger employees were in majority in the participants, as represented by Figure 4.1. This is due to the fact that the sample consists of the employees and most of the work force comprises young people. Almost 79% of the bank employees who participated in the survey were Nigerian. Rest of the participants have different ethnicities including approximately 12% African, 6% Asian and 3% European. The distribution of respondents according to their ethnicity is represented in Figure 4.2.

Figure 4.2: Ethnic Origin of Participants

Reliability of opinion increases with the experience of a respondent. Accepting this clause, the summary statistics of length of the employment of the participants is provided in Table 4.1 and the graphical representation of the respondents according to their working experience is given in Figure 4.3.

Figure 4.3: Length of Employment of Participants

Most of the employees included in the study, approximately 34%, have working experience of more than 10 years and this fact increases the credibility of the opinions given by these majority respondents. The distribution according to length of employment is also proportional to the experience of the participants, in other words the least experienced participants were the least in numbers in the sample. Only 17% respondents have less than 2 years of working experience. Length of employment 20% respondents is 3 to 5 years and that of 28% respondent is 6 to 10 years.

Figure 4.4 provides a comparison of different opinions of the bank employees for certain questions preceded by the discussion of these opinions.
