Cuban Policy

Introduction

The charismatic leader of the masses, Hugo Chavez is of the most controversial and influential political figures in the contemporary world (Carroll, 2012). He is the leader and champion of the monumental “Bolivarian Revolution” in Venezuela, which is loosely based on the ideals of the 19th century Latin American revolutionary leader Simon Bolivar. With this popular socialist movement Chavez has managed to attain the passion and support from the majority of Venezuelans, as well as several of the neighboring South American countries. The movement which has garnered the support of the socialist nations all over the world is essentially based on implementing several initiatives such as economic independence, objective and non pressurized foreign policy, and equitable distribution of revenues and most importantly anti corruption policies. Chavez, with his charisma and a long term vision for has been able to unite the public opinion and attain the support of the socialist and communist from around the world. He is undoubtedly one of the most significant men in the South American world, and the repercussions of his policies can be felt in the western world.

In the most recent elections, Chavez's support in Venezuela was at an all time low. The president, who had remained in office for a term of 14 years with three consecutive successful terms, was finding it difficult to combat the growing international pressures due to his controversial foreign policy. The faith of the voters in the country had been slackened by the chronic social and economic dilemmas. The health of the politician and rumors regarding the spread of cancer had caused the people to doubt his ability to lead the country and bring it out of its numerous dilemmas. However the charisma of the iconic politician proved too much for the opposition party; Hugo Chavez was able to win his fourth straight electoral victory, which would allow him to successfully rule the country up till 2019 (Watts & Lopez, 2012). The opposition party realized that the people of Venezuela had strong ties with the ideological Bolivarian revolution, and Higo Chavez was viewed as the only leader of this movement. No other leader in the country had the conviction or the passion that Chavez had displayed to the people; nor the charisma which made this politician into a regional and international phenomenon.
