Cultural Discrimination in the United States' Schools

Introduction

America is one of the most diverse countries of the world in the context of eh people living there. Western culture is dominant in the United States of America primarily. However, the culture of America is also influenced by the culture of the people who have migrated to the United States of America from different parts of the world, bringing in their own distinct culture to the US. The Native American, Asian, African, Latin American and the Polynesian cultures combine to make up the culture of the United States of America. The culture of America started its formation more than 10,000 years ago when the Asian Paleo Indians migrated to the continental United States (Hirsch, Kett & Trefil, 1987). United States has become an ethnically, racially and culturally diverse country due to the immigration of a large number of people from different parts of the world. Due to this increased cultural diversity, the cultural discrimination has also increased in the United States. The following papers will address the issue of discrimination in the schools of the United States of America. It will also throw light on how it affects student self-esteem. Some facts of cultural discrimination will also be provided. Lastly, a sociological Analysis based on the functionalistic view, conflict view and inter actionist view will be provided.

Discussion

Cultural discrimination has affected the ways of adaptation in the schools of the United States. Discrimination excludes the person from fully enjoying his civil, political, social, cultural and economic freedom. It is in contradiction of the basic human rights of the people. There are a number of things which can cause discrimination in the schools. Most of the cases of discrimination are on the basis of the color, sex, religion, caste culture, ethnicity, traditions social or ethnic origin, disability and status (Bell, Tracey, pp.256, 2006). Children are made a victim of discrimination which is making their social, as well as, personal lives difficult. Children from a particular ethnic, religious or social group are segregated from the other groups. This discrimination also takes away the opportunities from the children of minority groups to get the best possible education. The quality of education, the performance of children and the nature of education are affected by the discrimination in the schools of the United States. Adapting to these differences and discrimination is not an easy task. It is difficult to maintain the standard of education in such cases. As a result, the children in the schools of the United States are deprived of the basic human rights of all the humans of the world (Tierney, pp.12, 2007).

Effects of Discrimination on the Self Esteem of Students

Discrimination may seem harmless, but the psychological effects that it has on the students are adverse. General well being social worth, self esteem, as well as, social relations are affected adversely due to discrimination (Lynch, pp.165,1992).
