Culture and identity in a Muslim society

This book is based on several years of fieldwork by Garry S. Gregg in Morocco, in the area of Ouarzazate, this book is presenting the particular findings of culture and identity of the four Muslims, which Garry George had interviewed, however, this book also address the bigger area of the cultural psychology. George Gregg has based his study on an in-depth analysis of the villages, the culture of Moroccan on the whole, and awareness with the local tongue. His analysis of the lives of the four Muslims is refined and elaborated concerning the problems of the culture, family, religion, and the personal, psychological motivations within the culture of the society.

One of his informants was “Mohemmad”, he was a villager. Mohammed used to live in a concrete-block house, the house of Mohammed had facilities like electricity, water, a bathroom, etc. He had left his village and shofted to France, where he used to work in a coal mine and earned as much as a factory worker in Casablanca. He had availed the chance to make a pilgrimage to the city of Mecca and perform “Hajj,” but after hajj, his life took an upside turn and everything was taken away from him by his uncle. He had an opinion that after their independence things would change for them. He had an opinion that the muslims would have the chance to live in the way the Christians were living in the society and will be allowed to practice their religion and culture. However, unfortunately, the live of the Muslims in their area had not changed at all, and there were no change in their living conditions.
