Current Issues and Enduring Questions

Introduction

With respect to writing, Current Issues and Enduring Questions is a book well-versed in stating facts that may be traced back to its origins, and is thoroughly informative and subjective in its approach to talking about issues currently circulating the minds of everyone. These issues may bs cyber bullying, discussions on philosophical questions and the like. It provides a balanced and flexible analysis done on various current events topics and is a dual effort of two of the brightest minds in English. It has been known as quite capable of peaking student's interests and trends in executing argumentative, research based and analytical writing, and covers everything from classic to contemporary approaches to philosophy.

From the book, I have chosen to analyze the writings between pages 668 to 688, “Going Green: What must be done”, is called “Eco-Defense” by Edward Abbey. I plan to write an objective paper which goes through the variations in prose in this particular article, working from purpose-driven writing to writing strategy with respect to the topic. The author, who has performed a thesis on “Anarchism and the Morality of Violence” from the University of New Mexico, is active in the recent awareness of methods to be environmentally friendly. He advocates environmentally friendly establishments and has written several books on his findings on eco-friendly societies. The article is an excerpt from his book “One life at a time, please”(1989). He believes in a developing an eco-friendly thought process in all mankind about the decisions they make. This could mean being eco-friendly with what we buy, how we use it, recycle it or dispose of it. The article starts off with an example of self defense in human beings, and the rights of all mankind to put up a good fight in case of an attack in its natural habitat, and compares this example towards the environment and how the wild may react in the event of eco-terrorism. This particular term has been used by him in several other writings as well, and Abbey is particularly known for his first hand experience of such eco terrorism through his work with the park rangers.

Discussion

According to Abbey, the eco-terrorists commits acts that are detrimental to the evolution and prosperity of the natural world, and jobs such as coal mining, property development through forests, logging and so on are subjects that need an immediate and drastic response. In the past, Abbey has observed that extreme environmentalists had taken to means such as destruction of discriminating property, use of arson and bombings at logging sites or tree-spiking incidents. All of these are considered criminal acts under the United States law, and are condemned by other environmentalists. Although they do provide an insights into the mind set of struggling environmentalists who want to create a difference and save wildlife by any means possible. In Abbey's previous novel, “The Monkey Wrench”(1975), he pegs this term to eco sabotage, or “ecotage” as he names it.
