Introduction

The overall aim of the research study as a whole was to describe the field of DMT (as well as the other arts therapies) as fully as possible. Methodology

In order to pursue the research objectives, the study was designed in three parts: (1) preliminary research, consisting of semi-structured interviews with leading practitioners in the area, who acted as key informants, (2) the construction and testing of a questionnaire which was the main instrument of data collection, and (3) the .nal survey which gathered information about practising arts therapists in the UK.

The questionnaire was piloted and distributed to practising arts therapists registered with an arts therapies association. At the time of the study, formal registration procedures had not been completed for DMT but 155 names and addresses were available on the current membership list of the ADMT UK. Forty-one of the 155 dance movement therapists returned the questionnaire fully completed (Karkou & Sanderson 2000).

It seems there is an underlying position of dualism that separates the mind and body in the process of conceptualizing psychological disequilibrium as well as available treatment approaches. Rarely is the body viewed and utilized as an integral part of the therapy experience. In dance/movement therapy, however, the body is understood as a vehicle that gives form to unconscious processes which may contribute to psychological issues (Karkou & Sanderson 2000).

This form of expressive therapy transcends the idea that attention to the mind or body requires the exclusion of the other, and proposes that body movement may speak more genuinely and clearly than words can. In the healing of trauma, particularly physical and sexual abuse, DMT may provide needed attention to the site of the harm, which is often overlooked in verbal psychotherapy practice. The self as experienced through the body, or embodiment, is highly valued not only as a source of information but more importantly as an essential component of the healing process of trauma survivors.

Relationship Between Research Method And Research Methodology

Qualitative research is much more subjective than quantitative research and uses very different methods of collecting information which could be both primary and secondary. As already mentioned this study chooses the secondary method. The nature of this type of research is exploratory and open-ended.
