DATA MINING

Assignment 4: Data Mining

Assignment 4: Data Mining

Introduction

The study relates to the benefits of data mining to the businesses, in relation to this, it is important to note that with advances in collection and storage of data, organizations allowed to accumulate a huge amount of information in the database. However, knowledge extraction of these data has proven to be extremely challenging. Typically, traditional techniques for analyzing the data cannot be used due to the size of the data set as it is very large. In other situations the non-trivial nature of the data means that traditional approaches cannot be applied. Several organizations, such as Wal-Mart, TAM and NASA, hold in its technology department databases of hundreds of terabytes of information. Knowing that the storage of the largest possible amount of information is beneficial to its processes, it is acceptable to assume that the difficulty of interpreting and analyzing these data are directly proportional to the amount thereof.

Benefits of Data Mining to the Businesses

In today's competitive marketplace, organizations seek more intelligent be based in analysis of information from its internal and external environments, in order to gain an advantage over their competitors. The competitive intelligence has the purpose of monitoring and conducting informational allowing companies to act in advance and reduce the risks of operation. The decision support systems, which include the data mining, has great potential to support these activities, facilitating the processing, retrieval and management dissemination of information, since the aim of data mining to discover implicit knowledge not in databases. This paper aims to point out the benefits of using data mining techniques for competitive intelligence of organizations, checking the value of the obtained results and the costs of such a process. It sought to bring together that enables content to check whether it is worthwhile investing in such technology to support the activities of competitive intelligence. Thus, it was first made, the qualitative literature search is based ambos the knowledge of subjects. Then the search was made for academic papers to report the application of data mining techniques in real companies, is make a critical analysis of the collected material, in order to answer the questions of labor. It cover issues such as the company size, the methodology used in the process and nature of the information generated (Choudhary, Harding & Tiwari, 2009, 501-521). In the end, despite the difficulties, it was possible to point out the benefits investigated further top and make recommendations for the implementation of a successful process of knowledge discovery.

The phase of data mining is really where the information is extracted through algorithms that perform a particular task, thus generating a pattern among items in a database. Data mining was not created with the objective of replacing the current techniques for data analysis. The desire of researchers in data mining is to bring these existing techniques which have contributed to the field amplitude as well as its rapid growth. The knowledge extraction in databases is a dynamic and evolving process that involves relationships with ...
