Database Management System

Types of data base systems that can be used by the shoe store

There major sort of data base systems that can be effectively used by the shoe merchant to keep financial, employee and inventory records (Ramakrishnan, 2000, p.25). These databases includes

Network database

Relational database

Object Oriented Database

Here we will discuss the importance of the each data base and the reasons for which they are recommended to be used in the business to consumer processes.

Network Database

Network data base systems are effectively used by businesses these days as this is cost efficient and manages the data in much effective and efficient manner. This database system solves the problem of the data redundancy by representing relationships in form of sets apart from hierarchy. In such database system the children are regarded as members and the parents are regarded as owners. The purpose for using this database is that each member can have more than one owner. This shows that more connections can be established between the members and the parents that increase its flexibility. However there are some limitations while developing this database system which involves limited number of connections between the records and database is to be defined in advance (Nilsen, et.al, 1997, p.606).

Relational Database

Relational database is effectively used by the various business organizations these days to manage their data. As the name shows the relationship between the different files existing in this database management system is relational not hierarchical. The hierarchical method the system has to go through entire data n hierarchical manner in order to access the data. While in the relational database system the data is stored in the tabular form in which each row is uniquely identified. This makes it more convenient for the shoe store merchant to manage its different data such as financial records, inventory records, customers record separately that can be easily accessed when required (Zhang, 2001, p.838). Relational database systems work on the principals in which each table has got unique key field that uniquely indentify each row that allows the one table to connect with another. For example if the customer information is stored in one table this can be linked with the product table according to the requirement of the customer. Hence relational database can effectively be used to relate the customer information with the product information. The other major reasons for using this system may be that this system can be used with little or no training. The entries of the system can be redefined without making major changes in the overall system (Bakuya, et.al, 1997, p.680).

Object Oriented Databases

This data base can effectively used by the shoe merchant to organize their data using the photographs, audio and video of the products and the customers. The conventional databases are used to store and manage structured data such as names, addresses and product number etc. however the object oriented database management system can be used to store and manage the data in the form of media sources such as photographs of ...
