Detection of Human Metapneumovirus in Hospitalized Patients Admitted for Respiratory Illness in Malaysia

Abstract

Human Metepneumovirus is one of the most recent and rapidly increasing diseases which relates to the human respiratory system. Human Metepneumovirus is commonly known as HMPV. The clinical representation of HMPV resembles the virus of respiratory syncytial. HMPV can impact both upper and lower respiratory tracts. The disease is commonly witnessed in infants and young children. If not cured properly in early days; infants and young children can gain serious respiratory diseases. The following article tends to talk about the incidence of HMPV in Malaysia. The study was conducted from February 2010 to March 2012. Till March 2012, not a single case of HMPV infection was reported in Malaysia. During the study, the Institute for Medical Research (IMR) Kuala Lumpur gathered respiratory samples of almost twenty six hundred patients hospitalized in Malaysia with the complain of lower and upper respiratory tract infection. Out of the entire sample; six hundred and twenty five samples were negative for RSV, Flu A, Flu B, Adenovirus and Parainfluenza; the basic respiratory viruses found within the department of the laboratory. All the negative samples were analyzed for HMPV through a viral culture and Direct Immunofluorescence assay. After the tests were conducted; reverse transcription PCR was initiated over all the six hundred and twenty five samples. The entire process remained important to target the HMPV polymerase. For the purpose of clarifying the situation of HMPV; phylogenetic tree based over four hundred and fifty bp fragment of gene F was also mapped. The results highlighted some important aspects. One hundred and thirty respiratory samples which are almost 20.8% of the total sample remained positive about the viral culture and Immunofluorescence assay. Also, 26.7% which is one hundred and sixty seven patients were positive for HMPV through PCR. The most common symptoms related to the disease remain fever, wheezing and cough. The entire study concluded that majority of HMPV positive patients were suffering from HMPV A2 sub lineage. The article would highlight different and important aspects of the study conducted.

Detection of Human Metapneumovirus in Hospitalized Patients Admitted for Respiratory Illness in Malaysia

Introduction

HMPV has not yet been reported in Malaysia. This study intends to identify the frequency of HMPV viral. Reliable and valid methods of research will be utilized for the purpose of correct identification. The research study would also assess the epidemiology and the relevant clinical features of HMPV within the patients hospitalized in Malaysia. HMPV is the growing disease related to the respiratory systems. HMPV not prevailing in Malaysia suggests that proper initiatives must be taken to ensure that the virus do not enter Malaysia. The study will highlight the common prevalence factors and pathology of HMPV.
