Deviant Act

Introduction

Deviant act is the behavior that violates cultural norms. These are not criminal but socially wrong. This behavior or violated cultural norms include informal violation of social norms, such as rejecting folk-way and mores, and these are also violation of formal norms such as crime. There are many issues, which are not a crime but they are not socially accepted and liked. For instance, students procrastinate and not do their homework, same sex marriages, sexual harassment, etc. are examples of deviant acts. There are also formal crimes such as theft, murder, etc. which comes under deviant act.

In the current society of United States, same sex marriages are becoming very common. In few states, it also classified as legal but still in most of the states and even in the society (Cahill, pp.3-10), many people do not like it and consider it unethical. This paper will talk about a deviant act that is same sex marriages. This is socially not accepted, but it legalized in few states of America.

Discussion

Marriage is the state of being united to a person of the opposite sex. It is the legal and lawful relationship between the partners. Similarly, same sex marriages are the practice of marriage between two males or females. Gay marriages not accepted by many people still it was a highlighted issue among many individuals. It has been a common issue for at least a decade. In 1996, an act against the same sex marriages passed, as it not liked by the people of society. It clearly prohibited the gay marriages in the country, and even asked the government to ignore these marriages. Marriage sits directly links with the religion, society and law, the discussion around same-sex couples and being legal is one of the most complex topics in America.

Considering the fact that, these same sex marriages can never be socially accepted, and it is one of the prominent deviant acts these days. This behavior is informally not accepted in the society. The concept of marriage, which defined by, the religion, society and the court should not be misunderstood, which these days people are not accepting it (Thio, pp. 120-154). The concept of a man and a woman getting married is socially accepted and it appreciated by everyone. These days' people are going against what taught. This is the current deviant act that is so commonly being practiced, that the government has to legalize it so that it does not affect the society.

Same sex marriages as a non-deviant act

Most of the people living in American society have considered the same sex marriages a deviant act. A lot of people say that only because it gives an unfavourable impression on children's mind, so these should be prohibited. Several arguments done which does not prove it to be a deviant act.
