Disability Discrimination

Thesis Statement

“The role of media and society contribute to the discriminatory practices in United States, whereas, the Laws of discrimination have reduced the level of discrimination in American society”.

Introduction

Discrimination is a real issue of today's' world. Discrimination has so many forms and unfortunately all of them exist in our society. However, discrimination based on disability is observed everywhere. This discrimination is called Albeism. An albesit society treats people with no disability as standard of normal life that leads to services, public and private places, education and social work that are developed for the service of standard people, thus their system exclude disabled people inherently (Switzer & Vaughn, 2003).

In American society, one-fifth of American population is affected by disability. Only 33% of disabled people are above the age of 65. Disability varies and its several types. Some disabilities are the defects by birth. There are several laws that oppose discrimination on the basis of disabilities. In this paper, we will study the effect of media on discrimination of disability. Moreover we study the disability discrimination laws and its effects on society (Trulove, 2009).

Discussion

Society and Discrimination

The discrimination of disability is dependent on the type of social setting. There are two types of societies one is inclusive society and the other one is albesit. In albesit society, disabled people are more prone towards pity, isolation and reduced self esteem; on the other hand, the inclusive society the attitude towards disabled people is welcoming, pleasant. In these societies, disability tends towards sociability and interdependency between normal people and people with disabilities (Colker, 2012).

Discrimination and Disabled People

It is the fact that people with disabilities have substantially bad standards of life as compared to normal people. Orthodox medical descriptions have been recommending that due to impairment there are negative effects on the lives of people psychological and physical setting. However, disabled people and their organization do not accept this view as an authentic ground for comprehending the issues related to disability. A growing number of policy makers and professionals and people with disabilities especially in abroad consider that it is not impairment that does not let people to obtain good lifestyle. It is the restrictive environment and barriers of disabilities, which do not let people to have good lifestyle. Therefore, disability is the representation of intricate social constraints that are imposed on disabled people in a highly discriminative social setting. In these societies, disability is the ground for discrimination. This issue is worsened in communities of gay and lesbian, women with impairment and black people (Jaeger & Bowman, 2005).

The research of British council or organization of disabled people shows that the kind of discrimination faced by people with impairment is not just an issue of individual prejudice. It is institutionalised in the society. Discriminations in institutions, discriminatory policies, attitudes deny equal opportunities to people with disabilities. These practices have been observed in education, benefit system and employment opportunities together with support services, politics, leisure industry and built environment (Pfeiffer, 1994).
