Introduction

The Vietnam War affected America in that it caused citizens to gain a new view of government, military, and U.S. policy. The outlook on U.S. foreign principle altered drastically at the launch of the war, and the mind-set of American people towards the government continued in a down hill spiral of resentment, disarray, and skepticism throughout the drawn out, apparently pointless war.

By 1967 the prime American combat unit in Quang Tri and Thua Thien Provinces was the 3d Marine partition, an outfit of 24,000 headquartered at Dong Ha with five infantry regiments, one artillery regiment, and supporting units. Most of the partition, with the exclusion of the 4th Marines near Hue in Thua Thien Province, was positioned in a sequence of company-size strong points and battalion-size battle bases in northern Quang Tri Province to defend against a potential North Vietnamese thrust over the Demilitarized Zone. This barricade was renowned formally as the Strong issue Obstacle scheme but more routinely as the McNamara Line, named for receptionist of Defense RobertS. Development of an unattended ground sensor scheme was started during the Vietnam conflict in 1966 by Secretary of protecting against Robert McNamara. In the SEACORE task, under DARPA auspices, joined States Army Electronics order (ECOM) scientists evolved a number of electrical devices sensing apparatus, initially intended for use in the McNamara Line (McNamara, 1995, 267-271).
