Camillus House

Florida is among the most adversely affected states in terms of homelessness in United States. The AHAR Report of 2011 reveals that 1 out of every 4 people who were subjected to homelessness, belonged to Florida (UHAR 2012, p38). As of 2011, an estimated 300,000 people had to use the services of permanent supportive housing (PSH). This brings into light the role of community shelter houses in the South Florida region.

Camillus House was established to help the poor and homeless to rebuild their lives from the ground up in a harmonious manner. Camillus House provides a number of services and facilities to those who suffer from homelessness in a number of ways. This includes providing them with food, clothing as well as arranging for their accommodation (Camillus.org). The management of the Camillus House helps its clients to equip themselves with the skills and knowledge required to face the challenges of life. This is achieved through a well designed training and placement department. Moreover, healthcare services for those who have suffered from the trauma of homesickness at a physical and emotional level are also delivered at the community house.

In order to service the needs of the homeless people, the community house has developed a number of key values including compassion, hospitality, empowerment and availability. Camillus House accepts homeless people irrespective of their color, class or creed as it keeps close the teachings of Jesus Christ. Since a large number of these homeless people are hurt emotionally at some level due to their personal circumstances, the management and staff at the Camillus house ensures a nurturing environment to help these people blend in with others.
