Cystic Fibrosis (CF abbreviation) is a genetic disease inherited autosomal recessive primarily affecting the lungs, and to a lesser extent the pancreas, liver and intestine. It is caused by a mutation in the gene encoding the protein transmembrane conductance regulator in cystic fibrosis. This protein is involved in the passage of chloride through cell membranes and its deficiency alters the production of perspiration, juices gastric and mucus. Most healthy people have two functional copies of the gene; the disease develops when neither operates normally.
