Introduction

Literary movements in America begin from the Colonization and then there were various changes in its form due to the different events and literary movements which changed the beliefs and traditions of the people. This impact is very clearly reveal from the literature in the three distinct time periods; Colonial, Enlightenment and Transcendentalism. The literature of these periods also has strong influence on modern society.

Colonial

Period from the 1620-1776 is known as the colonial period in the history of American literature. Florida was under the British rule soon after the discovery by Columbus. England established first settlement in the Jamestown, Virginia in 1607, and later in Massachusetts. The main concern was to expend the empire, treasure, trade and solutions for unemployment and population in England. The literature produced in that period is usually by the people who moved their or travelled for the trade purpose. It was from these people that English literature moved to these settlements.

The quality produced in these settlements in the beginning was not considered as the classic or excellent quality literature. It was commonly believed that these literary works were the primitive colonial writings. Later these colonial writings improved and begin to show reflections of the American life and other religious believes. The literary trend usually followed the expression of the environment and other events of the time. It was a general trend to reflect the American tradition and thought to the world. Colonial literature has very strong influence on the administration and constitution of America (McFerson, p.4).

In the Colonial period there was an excellent quantity of American literature was produced. One of such literary works was produced by William Strachey, the manuscript of A True Repertory of the Wrack and Redemption of Sir Thomas Gates, Kt., upon and from the Islands of the Bermudas. This was one of the excellent piece of writing which reflects the all the elements of the American writing. It provides the complete chronicles of the settlement and expression of the nature and detailed account of the events. This story provides the detailed pictorial sketch of the events and the beautiful description of all the events.

Enlightenment

The enlightenment period is the period of science and logic. This was the time when there was trend of writing and proving everything with the logical justification. This period of literary movement was marked from 1750-1800. ...
