Introduction

The paper takes into account the critical review of the play Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by the Footlight players. Written by Robert Louis Stevenson, the novel was the all time hit and people liked it a lot. The story revolves around the two main characters of the novel Dr. Jekyll and Dr. Hyde and explains their eerie tale. The novel was written by the author in 1886 but the film was directed in 1932 by the American director Rouben Mamoulian. It was a tremendous hit and received an Oscar award for the best horror movie. The film was critiqued for several reasons including the actor's performance mainly. However, the play has been again re-performed by the Footlight players with different action which makes it more attractive for the audience. The drama was mainly played with the addition of music system in it that helped in creating the play more interesting for the audience.

The paper is based on the critical review of the play "Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde" that was done by the footloose production. The play is based on the two main characters of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Dr. Jekyll is a doctor and portrayed a rich man having a sizeable fortune while Mr. Hyde is the inheritor of Dr. Jekyll's fortune. The plays start with the scene in which Mr Utterson who is a lawyer and a friend of Dr. Jekyll taking a walk with his distant relative. While walking, they saw the door of the house where there is some man standing at the door. That house is basically the clinic of Dr. Jekyll that also has a connection with the house of the doctor. Utterson, the lawyer discovers the true story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and works on it for protecting Dr. Jekyll from the danger (Vacca, 2002). In the start of the story, the character of Dr. Jekyll is shown as an innocent. However, gradually the situation turns against cruel Jekyll who was plagued by guilt, he abandoned his discovery while his marriage to Beatrix was finally announced. However, suddenly re-appears as an evil himself, determined to win him. It seems particularly when Jekyll finds strong unexpressed emotions, as in the scene where, sinking more and more in the dark to go with his fiancée, whistling carelessly cabaret song, song to words harmless in them.

As the novel primarily explains the psychological and physiological aspects by explaining the dual nature of the man and society, the play performed by different actors in the footloose production also covers the same story. However, the effects of the play were made clearer due to the addition of the sound system.
