Deep Sea Drilling Project

Introduction

The deep sea drilling project initiated in the year 1968 till 1983. This project was under the contract between two parties namely, The Regents and the National Science Foundation (NSF). This ocean drilling project was signed on the in the year 1966 on the 24th of June. The project was directed under the guidance of the (JOIDES) Joint Oceanographic Institute for Deep Earth Sampling and was funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). There were several operations carried out such as the continuous seismic as well as magnetic study. Under this project, it was clearly verified that the basin of the ocean is preferably young which further confirmed the feature of the sea floor dispersal as well as tectonic plates that are in the ocean. The ocean is covered with thick salt layers, which were shown by the samples taken from the bed of the Mediterranean Sea. The samples showed that the sea was completely dried 12 million years back. There were about 600 holes drilled by the deep sea drilling project in the bed of the sea floors all across the world (Deep Sea Drilling Project, 2011).

With the help of the Ocean Drilling Program, the Deep sea project was successful in the year 1984. One of the main accomplishments of the Deep Sea Drilling Project is subsistence of the sea floor which is proving of the plate's tectonics as the correct mold of the crustal geodynamics.Discussion

Stated as one of the most remarkable accomplishments from the engineering point of view, the main site for many further advances in deep sea drilling is the Glomar Challenger. There were several problems solved with the help of this project. One of the major problems that were solved is the replacement of the dilapidated drill bits. The maximum penetration of depth ...
