Different Types Ducks in the Long Island

Introduction

Long Island is situated in the east of Manhattan, is an estuary of the Atlantic Ocean, and New York to the south. It comprise of four countries, include two districts of New York, but Nassau and Suffolk refer to Long Island. It is 110 miles long, and 21 miles wide, close to Connecticut River. Long Island is heavily used for a number of purposes such as boating, marine industry, swimming, commercial and sport fishing, military maneuvers, waste disposals, and transportation.

In Long Island, various species are present include plants (phytoplankton, vascular plants, and sea weeds - Macroalgae); and animals divided into invertebrates (sponges, worms, cnidarians, mollusks, tunicates, crustaceans, and echinoderms), and vertebrates (mammals, reptiles, fish, and birds). There are three types of ducks found in Long Island includes Sea Ducks, Puddle/Dabbling Ducks, and Diving Ducks (Gochenaur, 1978).

The coastal environment of Long Island is homogeneous, and a crossing point between water and land. The closer view of Long Island reveals that it has a variety of species. The Long Island comprises of muddy shores, bottoms of sub tidal bay that increase its ecological and environment importance due to eelgrass, the aquatic vegetation. It also includes sandy beaches that take the substance of the energy of the Atlantic Ocean.

The environment of the ocean is turned out to be varied extraordinarily, and is homogeneous, because of the differences in salinity, surface, temperature, depth, and subsurface currents. In Long Island, these differences increase the concentration of resources that are food, which is loved by the birds such as ducks. This diverse environment contributes immensely to bring a variety of birds as habitants in Long Island.

The dabbling ducks further classified into nine species of duck includes Northern Shoveler, Wood Duck, Blue-wing Teal, Mallard, American Wigeon, Northern Pintail, Green-wing Teal, Gadwall, and American Black duck. The diving ducks are of ten types namely, Scaup Species, Canvasback, Hooded Merganser, Redhead, Ring-neck duck, Ruddy duck, Red-breasted Merganser, Common Merganser, Common Goldeneye, and Bufflehead. The another species that are found on Long Island include Sea ducks, and these are further categories into seven types explicitly Surf Scoter, Common Eider, Long-tailed duck, White-winged Scoter, Harlequin duck, King Eider, and Black Scoter.

Discussion

Diving ducks belongs to the family of Anatidae, and commonly known as Scaups and Pochards. These ducks feed themselves by diving in searching food beneath the water surface. Geese also belong to Anatidae family, and come under Anserini tribe. The genera of Geese are Anser, Branta and Chen, the grey geese are Anser, the black ones are Branta, and Chen refers to white geese. Dabbling ducks are also known as Puddle ducks, and they are ...
