Effects of single parents and divorce on children

Introduction

In this advancing generation, everyone talks about liberalism and freedom of expression, but on the other side a common perception has been developed now regarding single families and the societies do not accept single parent families as traditional; families. Other than death of one parent, divorce is the main reason that results in a family left alone in the society with a single parent, either mother or father (Rendall, Joshi, Oh, & Verropoulou, 2001, pp.365-365).

There have been many research studies carried out in order to find out the effects of divorce and single parenting on the children. Some have written about the positive effects but after reviewing the present and past literature, one can easily develop a perception about the negative ones since the positive are way too limited in front of the negative ones (Western Report, pp.34-42).

The challenges and the distress that a child having just one parent faces include the struggle to live in the society and the psychological effects. The tradition of the society since long past has been such that only the families with both parents are considered as successful ones and the ones with just one parent, mainly resulting sue to divorce are not accepted whole heartedly (Beaudet, & Perez, 1999, pp.21-32).

A general survey

According to a survey of The U.S. Census Bureau, in United States, of all the families, 30 percent are run by just one parent. In 2000, the number of single parented families exceeded 12 million. The main question is the wellbeing of the children suffering from their parent's divorces and single parenting and this has been debated a lot. It has been a proven fact that such children face many challenges in daily life and people have been observed to be loud and strident towards them (Rafferty, & Wiggan, 2011, pp.275-293).

The behaviors of such children including the choice of school and the selection friends, the likings and the disliking, self handling in adverse situations, cognitive development and aggression have been researched a lot by the researchers. In a survey, 13,500 mothers were asked to gage their child's behavior and the hyperactivity, emotional issues and behavioral conducts were asked to be noticed and judged (Booth, 2002, pp.09-14).

The results, as the previous studies told, were not in favor of the children with lone parents at all and they behaved very badly while the markings. Contrastingly, the behavioral issues were comparatively very less in the children living with both their father and mother (Rendall, Joshi, Oh, & Verropoulou, 2001, pp.365-365).

General Effects of the Single-Parent Household

It has been researched quite significantly that the conditions are far worse for children having just one parent as compared to the children having two. The structure of a family decides the extent of wellbeing of any child in United States and statistically it has been seen and observed that children having one parent or divorced parents are not ...
