Author Qualification and Preparations

This paper is written by three authors; Loretta Sweet Jemmott, is the director of Center of Health Disparities Research at the School of Nursing of University of Pennsylvania, she also teaches Psychiatric Health Care Nursing at the same institution. She is a recognized researcher and has received the Claire M. Fagin distinguished researcher award.

Holding a Ph.D. degree in psychology from Harvard University, John B. Jemmott III teaches communication psychiatry in the School of Medicine of University of Pennsylvania. Also, he is the Director of Center of Health Behavior and Communication research at the Annenberg Public Policy Center (www.annenbergpublicpolicycenter.org).

Holding a Ph.D. degree from the Stanford University, Ann O'Leary is a behavioral psychologist and is associated with the Center of Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta. Her specialization is in HIV associated behaviors.

All of these researchers belong to the health-care industry and have distinct association with research in the domain of HIV and creating its prevention strategies; due to this, their research can be considered as reliable. They also worked on numerous projects, which created awareness, among women for STDs. This paper is written in an effort to determine whether or not prevention interventions given to African American women in the area of Newark, NJ through primary care settings (i.e. nurses and other health care providers) are sufficient for increasing cautious behavior before deciding to have intercourse. African American women aged between 18 to 45 years having sexual experience are used as test subjects in this study. African American women working as nurses were chosen to provide psychological training to all the test subjects.

Tile and Problem Statement

The title of this research paper is 'Effects on Sexual Risk Behavior and STD Rate of Brief HIV/SID Prevention Interventions for African American Women in Primary Care Settings.

As indicated by a previous research, the major cause of death among African American women in the Unites States is due to AIDS. The reported rates of STDs are higher among African American women as compared to the Native American women; in addition to this, the African American women are greatly affected by HIV due to the incautious sexual behavior. Primary health care settings can provide better orientations to the prevention interventions, especially in one to one counseling sessions. However, evidences for such claims are very less; therefore, the researchers decided to conduct this study (Jemmott, et al, 2007).

Literature Review and Conceptual Framework

Although this research paper does not have a proper section of literature review; however, the introductory sections provide the necessary background information needed to understand the past concerns of researchers. These concerns include previous facts about the mortality rate due to STDs, impact of previous awareness information on this issue which also proved to be insufficient, and evidence about the effectiveness of behavioral interventions in minimizing the behavior associated with risks of HIV.

This research aims to achieve these objectives; to test different theories used as ...
