ELL Student Lesson Plan

Part 1: Lesson Plan

An appropriate lesson plan is necessary for the students of each grade or level. This holds true especially for the class in which includes ELL students as well (Ferris et al, 2009, pp. 67-87). There should be such a lesson plan which encourages the interpersonal skills among the students to break the cultural barriers. The lesson plan designed focuses on increases the communication and interaction skills of the students.

ELL Student

The ELL student in my class is a new student who has recently moved into the country with his family. The student is shy, lacks confidence as he does not have command over the English language. He does have some basics of the language and he only needs a boost in his self confidence which can be attained through better communication and interaction. The critical period for the children is the cognitive development milestone. In this critical period, the children can learn different cognitive capabilities (Mishra, 2008, pp. 75-98). This is the reason why it is vital for the teachers to ensure that the written, reading language basic skills of the children are strong as it will have an impact on their entire life.

Approach

The non-teacher-centered approach will be utilized in order to promote the student to student interactions (Nasr, 2006, pp. 26-64). This will improve the language skill of the ELL student and will enhance the language skills of the other students as well. It will improve the confidence level of the students all the while providing them with a good learning experience. This lesson will also improve the interpersonal skills of the students.

Lesson Content

The content of the lesson plan is focused on the learning of the English language. The lesson will consist of two 30 minutes sections which will focus on ensuring that the students learn certain words. This will assist the ELL student in my class as he will easily be helped out a little extra as compared to the rest of the class without him or other students realizing this fact. All the students will be able to learn new words in the class and the ELL student will learn the same through the pictorials and illustrations and multimedia which will assist him in learning more. The main focus of the lesson plan is also on the development sequence of the students as this lesson plan will enhance the intellectual development of the students.

Teacher's Role

My main role will be to observe the students, especially the ELL student. Since the approach that I will be using is the student to student interaction, I must not interfere much to ensure maximum interaction between the students. I will make groups of the students and will ensure that the ELL student is in the group of helpful, cooperative and talkative students of my class. These helpful and cooperative students will be able to help the ELL student with the activities they are supposed to do while the talkative ...
