Abstract

In this research paper, I will be discussing and explaining the identification and assessment procedures used to identify students with emotional and behavioral difficulties. Special schools and institutions have been established solely for the purpose of education the emotional and behaviorally disturbed children. More over my research will also be highlighting the social, academic and motivational issues associated with these students. Although there are many issues which these students face, but the most important ones are discussed in this research paper. The main theme of this research is to figure out the eligibility criteria of identifying which students to be categorized in special education. In the end, different techniques and teaching methodology are explained which are usually practiced by special schools.

Introduction

Many researchers and books are written on how to define a student who has emotional and behavioral difficulties. In this research paper, I will be discussing and explaining the identification and assessment procedures used to identify students with emotional and behavioral difficulties. More over my research will also be highlighting the social, academic and motivational issues associated with these students.

Many surveys point out that behavioral disorders vary among young adults, ranging from 2 and 6% in K-12 students. This percentage translates into 1.3 to 3.8 million cases of behavioral disorders among the school and pre-college population. The identification of emotional and behavioral recalcitrant students has always been a problem for special schools. Emotional disturbance includes mood disorders, such as depression, bipolar disorder, thought disorder, anxiety disorder, obsessive and compulsive disorder (Tappen, 2009, pp 4-5). There are different schools that have been established, solely for the purpose of educating the emotionally and behaviorally difficult students. These students cannot compete with the mainstream students, and that is the reason they become more stressed and exhausted when they do not achieve what a normal student is achieving. These students have a fear driven nature and avoid social interaction with their peers, friends and teachers (www.wsasp.or).

Discussion

This research paper will be identifying and assessing procedures to identify students with emotional and behavioral difficulties.

Identifying Special children

There are different state laws which specifically deal with special children and how do identify these students. It is nearly impossible to impose a law for the admission of special children. There are a total of three federal laws which have been passed for individuals with disabilities.
