SECTION 01: INTRODUCTION

This research will endeavour to gather information about various skills and qualities employers in the town of Mullingar require when recruiting jobseekers into a business environment and to evaluate if the training programme where the author is working equips the trainees with these skills and qualities.

In completing this research the information gathered will be used by the training centre where the author is employed to assess their Business Studies training programme and if necessary, make changes to the programme to ensure they are equipping trainees with the skills and qualities required to gain employment locally.

1.1 Research Topic

The topic that this research will look at is “what are the personal, practical and technical skills and the qualities employers in the Mullingar town are looking for in jobseekers and if the authors training programme is equipping their trainees with these skills.

The reason the author choose this topic is that she is a tutor / coordinator in a local training initiative programme and one of the main function of the programme is to train and prepare trainees for employment. The coordinator assists the trainees in securing employment, when they have successfully completed the programme.

Due to the changes in the employment market and the fact that there is a large number of applicants applying for office positions, which leave a high level of competition for position, the author is eager to research what personal, practical and technical skills and qualities employers are looking for in jobseeker and if the training centre she is employed in is providing the trainees with the skills required thus giving the trainees an equal chance of securing employment.

1.2 Statement of Purpose

The purpose of this research is to identity the skills and qualities employers seek during the process of recruiting for office level positions in jobseekers and the extent to which the local training initiative programme is equipping their trainees with these skills.

The author will also be in direct contact with the employers and this will help to define and explore the skills and qualities employers are seeking. This will also facilitate the author to design the training programme to meet the need of local employers, as well as the needs of the trainees. Lastly, this will assist improve the focus on the target trainees and the skills labour market require.

This research will be both relational and descriptive. Descriptive research describes what is happening in a particular area using “what” and “why” questions, seeking to understand and explain aspects of a topic.
