CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

Problem Background

Noticeable increase in the in the issues related to environmental health of the world has induced the countries create and implement the appropriate environmental policies with the intention to protect the environment from the damages of the human process including organizational pollution, cutting of forest as well as emissions of greenhouse gases. However, the implementation of the environmental policies require appropriate strategies as the integration of the environmental policies is quite challenging depending on the governmental, cultural as well as economical circumstances of the particular country. Currently developed countries such as United Kingdom, United States of America and other developed countries are emphasizing on the integration of the environmental policies in their legal system in order to ensure the restriction on the organizations to continue their operative in an environmental friendly way.

Developing countries are also focusing on contributing in environmental safety. For this purpose, the government bodies of the developing countries are trying to facilitate some appropriate alterations in their environmental policies. The intention of the study is to explore the major reasons that induce difficulty in the integration of the environmental policies in the working conditions of the developing countries such as Nigeria. For this purpose, the study will be focusing on the case study of the Nigerian Government and the Oil and gas sector. The researcher will be highlight the crux of the case study in order to highlight the challenges of the oil and gas sector of Nigeria in integrating the environmental policies in its working conditions.

Problem Statement

Environmental health damage has become the most threatening issue. Throughout the world, countries are focusing on implementing environmental policies in their working conditions to ensure the safety of the environment (Corbera, Estrada, & Brown, 2010, pp. 355-388). In addition to it, business ethics are exerting pressure on the organization to follow the rules and legislations pertain to the environmental issues. It is observed that developed countries have prominent and strict rules and regulations regarding the environmental issues (Elzen, & et al., 2010, pp. 433-465). The research is intended to highlight the legal posture of the environmental policies of oil and gas sector of Nigeria in order to extricate the concern of the Nigerian government as well as public response in facilitating integration of the environmental policies.
