ABSTRACT

Diabetes is a debilitating disease that can impact a person's health in numerous ways. In recent years, diabetes has grown into an epidemic scale in the United Kingdom. The incidence of type II diabetes has greatly increased in nearly every age group of the population of the United Kingdom. In 2007, the British Department of Health estimated that 23.6 million people in the United Kingdom had diabetes.This dissertations helps to show an evaluation of knowledge on Diabetes among the older people in Newham Borough Council, London.

CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Diabetes mellitus, which is more commonly known as diabetes, comes with a big group of diseases that are related to the metabolism. In this disease, a man has to suffer from a number of different diseases, like high level of sugar in the blood, etc. The reason for this problem could be numerous, it could be because the human body loses its ability to develop adequate amount of insulin or cells in the body could stop responding to the insulin, which is being produced by the body. Diabetes is a type of disease in which anything can happen to a person in an unexpected manner, and the complications can sometimes have severe consequences.

Diabetes is a disease that has to be managed in a proper way. A person with diabetes, like a patient with chronic disease, needs to be educated so that he can better understand the different stages of the illness of diabetes. Therapeutic education can empower these diabetic patients, to become an actor of his illness and be more autonomous. Diabetes is a disease that constantly evolves in the patient, and the diabetic patient needs to have reliable information, which is concise, and well integrated. The proper management of diabetes enables a person to lead a better quality of life.
