Abstract

The study at hand presents the concept of physiotherapist delivering on-call in respiratory care. It aims to study this medical concept in a holistic sense. Besides this, the current research also considers studying the perceptions of physiotherapist delivering on-call respiratory care in UK. This research is conducted to study the challenge of on-call respiratory in a sophisticated manner. The application of SPSS software to obtain and analyze the results of the research has enabled the study to give more accurate assessments.

CHAPTER 1

1.0 Introduction

This study undertakes to discuss the evaluation of the perceptions of physiotherapist delivering on-call in respiratory care in UK. An extensive literature has been searched in order to perform the assessments of the physiotherapists' on-call delivery in the respiratory care. The study also elaborates upon the concepts and medical evaluations in an extensive manner.

1.1 Introduction

Emergency on-call physiotherapy may be defined as “the provision of respiratory/cardio respiratory/cardiothoracic physiotherapy or combinations of respiratory and orthopaedic physiotherapy, out of normal working hours” (Gough and Doherty, 2007). Respiratory physiotherapy is provided by a respiratory physiotherapist during normal working hours. However, 'on-call' respiratory treatment, during weekends and evenings is provided by physiotherapists who work in other non-respiratory areas (for example, musculoskeletal or neurology).Usually the physiotherapist delivers the service in turns as per the departmental on-call rota. This on-call physiotherapist is expected to attend to respiratory cases /alone, in isolation, at any time during their on-call shift.

Although the cases referred to an on-call physiotherapist are varied, they are all conditions that require immediate attention. The challenge that an on-call physiotherapist faces is to assess, diagnose, plan and evaluate their care/treatment in a short time frame to prevent deterioration of a patient's condition. It is the combined responsibility of the physiotherapist and the hospital to ensure that the health care provider is equipped with the skills to contend with emergency on-call situations (Cross et al 2003). Hence, it is not only essential for the physiotherapist to be competent in their speciality but also have the skills for on-call duty. This is even more challenging for non-respiratory physiotherapists, as they do not necessarily have the training and an education which prepares them for a respiratory on-call treatment.
