Everyday use is written by Alice Walker and this story is based on the basic concept of inheritance which represents the political movement of early 60s of Native African Americans. In this story the basic idea of African American has been discussed also discusses the main problems that a native family faced. The main character of this story is MAMA, who lived with her daughters naming Dee Wangero and Maggie the youngest one.

Everyday Use "was published when Alice Walker began her writing career. It was part of her collection In Love and Trouble: Stories of Black Women in 1973. The work has been critically acclaimed and generated many reviews and critique. The story revolves around a black woman belonging to a rural area, who believes in preserving her heritage and valuing ancestral assets (Nicholas, 2009). The story focuses on the differences of approach as reflected in the behavior of Mrs. Johnson and her youngest daughter Maggie, who lives with her successful daughter DEE or Wangero. They were born in America.

It all starts when Dee visits her mother and sister. Her mother, Mrs. Jhonson recollects that hatred Dee exhibited for her home life as a child. In her childhood, she put her house ablaze, that left indelible scare on Maggie and scarred her for life. After the incident, Mrs. Johnson raised funds through the local church and sends Dee away for education. Maggie stayed home and learned traditional skills from her mother. The story takes into account the conflict in approach that the mother has with her daughter.

( Maggie - she is the younger daughter and stays at home and learns the traditional skills, while her sister is educated at school. Her mother deems her as plain looking with no extraordinary skills. Yet she is truly humble as she lives a traditional life of a rural southerner

( Mama - she narrates the entire story. She is a middle-aged woman who has the responsibility of bringing her daughter up. Despite being poor, she is portrayed as a strong lady who takes pride in her history and present way of living. She confidently interacts with her children and has led a life full of hard work, as manifested by her strong hands. Her body structure is similar to that of a man's, which also describes her role as not only a mother, but sole provider for her daughters.
